Early hours are the best time for the Godavari ghats. Simple tips for a peaceful bath and prayer.

Ramkund on the Godavari in Panchavati is the heart of the Nashik Kumbh. It is the rectangular stone tank where, according to tradition, Lord Rama bathed during his exile, and it is the main bathing place of the Simhastha. The same ghat can feel completely different depending on the hour you arrive, and the early morning is by far the best time for a calm visit.

Why go before sunrise

In the hour before sunrise the stone steps are cool, the air is quiet and the queues are short. Local residents come for their daily bath and prayers, flower sellers are setting up and the temples around the tank are just opening. By mid-morning the same lanes fill with tour groups and families, and during festival periods it can become difficult to even reach the water.

What to carry

  • A change of clothes and a towel in a waterproof bag.
  • Slip-on footwear that is easy to remove and leave at the entrance.
  • A small amount of cash in small notes for offerings and flower sellers.
  • Only essential valuables. Leave jewellery and extra cards at your hotel.

Etiquette on the steps

Ramkund is an active place of worship and a place where families immerse the ashes of departed relatives. Keep your voice low, avoid photographing people who are bathing or performing rites, and follow the instructions of police and volunteers on the steps. The stones are wet and often slippery, so go slowly, hold the hand of elders and children, and do not push in narrow places.

Combine it with nearby places

Kalaram Temple, Sita Gufa and Kapaleshwar Temple are all within walking distance of Ramkund, so a morning at the ghat can naturally continue into a half-day Panchavati walk. In the evening the Godavari aarti is a quieter, beautiful experience if you prefer to avoid the morning rush.
