One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, at the source of the Godavari.
Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and sits at the foot of Brahmagiri hill, where the Godavari begins. The lingam is unusual: it has three faces, standing for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
The black stone temple you see today was built in the 18th century under the Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nanasaheb). Next to the town is Kushavarta Kund, where the Kumbh bath of Trimbakeshwar is held.
